In this video, Handyguys Brian and Paul outline how to choose a generator. We recoded this as part of a live stream hence the longer length. There are many types of generators, ranging from whole house to smaller inverter generators. Knowing your needs in terms of generators can highlight which one is most cost efficient and effective.
Whole House Generators
Ideally, a homeowner can have a whole house generator that keeps things as normal as possible when a summer storm or hurricane hits. A main downside though is the cost associated with this kind of generator. Not only are there upfront costs for installation, but there are also maintenance costs such as oil change maintenance as well as costs associated with testing and running the machine periodically. While these generators allow for the most use, they may not be practical for the homeowner’s needs. In addition, bigger, heavier generators need wheels to move, more fuel, and are louder than smaller generators. These generators are best for places that experience widespread outages and harsh climate conditions or homeowners that may have extensive electrical needs.
Deciding on Generators
First, decide how big of a generator you need based on your location and individual needs. Is it just used for a medical device, sump pump, or just to power a few lights and fan? Make a list of what in a power outage will be critical for you to have working. In addition, think about this in terms of both winter and summer outages. Most commonly, individuals want their freezer, refrigerator, and fireplace to be powered depending on when the outages happen. Next, compare the wattage needed to power this list to what kind of generator you want to buy.
Smaller Generators
In terms of a smaller generator, the Handyguys have talked about the Honda and Generac inverters. These are equivalent to one circuit and typically cannot handle AC, electric heat, and large sump pumps. However, these generators are smaller and easier to store and are best for small power outages.
With all generators, remember to never operate them indoors as accidents do happen, and they can start fires. Finally, make sure to fill up a generator with gas after it has cooled and when it is not running. Find the perfect generator for you today!
